Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs in or on the surface of the ovary. Many women have ovarian cysts and most have little or no discomfort. Most ovarian cysts disappear without treatment within a few months. However, some women present with rupture or torsion of the ovarian cysts that can lead to severe pain and may require urgent surgery. An ovarian cyst may represent, among others: a benign functional cyst (for example, follicular or corpus luteum cyst), simple cyst, endometrioma, benign teratoma, hydrosalpinx, serous cystadenoma, or ovarian cancer. It is important to determine whether the ovarian cyst is likely benign or has a reasonable chance of being malignant. It is also important to determine if there is an urgent or nonurgent condition to help guide treatment decisions.
