When a patient sees her doctor for cervical cancer screening, the doctor may perform a Pap smear or an HPV test or both tests to screen her for changes that may develop into precancer or cancer of the cervix. Women should have routine cervical cancer screenings even if they have no symptoms because these tests are able to detect early changes to treat abnormalities before they progress to cancer.
